About Linda Gilbert

My aim is not to paint beautiful images. Unseen energies and earth sciences interest me. My practice gives form to barely conscious, intangible sensations I experience from particular environments and sometimes people. Working intuitively, the paintings are grounded in science relating to sensory perception, consciousness and neuroaesthetics.

The materiality of the surfaces used reflects my interest in limestone - a vault for cycles of life and death. The idea of making contemporary rock art feels primal and exciting. Inscribing and painting on limestone surfaces connects me to the earliest evidence of human mark-making. I have a deep sense of connection to the Earth through these materials. I incorporate techniques used by the Surrealists and surrender control to allow the unconscious to emerge through the work. My paintings are tangible responses to an embodied process.

While beauty can be a by-product, my aim is to stimulate curiosity and provide my own visual language for the unseen energies that swirl around us.
